FAQ

Common questions, plain answers.

Limited medical insurance is different from ACA major medical. These answers explain what it is, what it covers, and what to expect.

What is limited medical insurance?

Limited medical (also called fixed indemnity) is a type of supplemental health coverage that pays you fixed dollar amounts for covered services like doctor visits, prescriptions, hospitalization, and ER. It is NOT major medical insurance and is not a substitute for ACA-qualified coverage — but it is significantly more affordable and can be enrolled in any time of year.

Is this Obamacare / an ACA plan?

No. Limited medical plans are not ACA-qualified health insurance and they do not satisfy the ACA individual coverage requirement (in states that still enforce it). They are a separate category of coverage designed to offset everyday medical costs at a lower monthly premium.

Can I be denied for pre-existing conditions?

Most limited medical plans do not require a medical exam and accept applicants regardless of medical history. However, many carriers have a 6-12 month exclusion period for pre-existing conditions — meaning the plan won't pay benefits for those specific conditions during that initial window. Your licensed specialist will walk through how each plan handles this for your situation.

How much does it cost?

Plans start as low as $40/month for individuals on essential coverage. Typical household plans run $80-$140/month. Premier plans with higher daily benefits, dental, and vision riders can reach $200+. Actual pricing depends on your age, state, and plan choice.

Can I see my own doctor?

Yes. Most limited medical plans pay you a fixed benefit per covered service regardless of which provider you see — there are no network restrictions on most plans. You can use your existing doctor, an urgent care, or any licensed provider.

Is there a waiting period before coverage starts?

Most plans have no waiting period for accident coverage. Sickness and routine-care benefits typically begin within 1-30 days of enrollment depending on the carrier. Pre-existing conditions may have a longer waiting period (see above). Your specialist will give you exact start dates before you enroll.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. Limited medical plans are typically month-to-month with no long-term contract. You can cancel any time without penalty. Your specialist will explain the carrier's exact cancellation policy.

What if I already have employer coverage?

Limited medical plans work alongside employer coverage as supplemental insurance. They can help cover deductibles, copays, and out-of-pocket costs on your existing plan. Some clients use them to reduce overall monthly health spend by switching to a higher-deductible employer plan and adding limited medical on top.

Do you sell my information to other companies?

Your information is shared only with the licensed insurance agent we match you with. We do not sell consumer information to mass marketers or third-party lead aggregators. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

How do I file a claim?

Most plans use a simple reimbursement model: you see your doctor, pay your bill, then submit the receipt to the carrier (online, by app, or by mail). The carrier pays you the fixed benefit amount within 7-14 days. Your specialist walks you through the exact process for your carrier.

Are these short-term plans?

No. Short-term health insurance is a different product (governed by separate state regulations). Limited medical / fixed indemnity plans are designed for ongoing year-round coverage with month-to-month renewal.

Why was I matched with a specific plan?

Our system suggests plans based on your age, state, household income, and current insurance situation. Your licensed specialist then refines the recommendation based on a brief conversation about your specific needs and budget. You always have the final say on which plan to choose — or whether to enroll at all.
